Take note of this issue with any apps you’ve updated in the past 24 hours.

From Cult of Mac:
App Store Issue Causing Newly-Updated Mac & iOS Apps To Crash

Hold onto your Mac and iOS app updates for the time being, because they’re likely to break your apps.

An issue with Apple’s App Store and Mac App Store is causing newly-updated Mac and iOS apps to become nonfunctional. Users are reporting that after updating certain apps, they no longer load, but simply crash at the startup screen. It is advised that users avoid updating any of their software until the issue is fixed.

The issue was highlighted by Instapaper creator Marco Arment. After seeing the latest version of his iOS app go live in the App Store, Arment was “deluged by support emails and Twitter messages from customers,” who could no longer open his app.

Last night, within minutes of Apple approving the Instapaper 4.2.3 update, I was deluged by support email and Twitter messages from customers saying that it crashed immediately on launch, even with a clean install.

Arment says the issue is affecting users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and in other countries. However, interestingly, those in Australia aren’t seeing the issue.

The Next Web, reports that the Instapaper issue was fixed when Arment reached out to Apple with details of the problem. However, Apple provided Arment with no feedback on the issue, and neither did it acknowledge any problem at all.

The issue appears to have affected certain apps that have been updated within the last 24 hours — but not all of them. The Next Web has compiled a list of those known to be broken, including:

  • Goodreader
  • Readdle Scanner Pro
  • Threadnote
  • Angry Birds Space HD Free
  • Metronome+
  • Dolphin HS Browser

Once again, until we receive confirmation that these issues are fixed, we’re advising users not to update their Mac or iOS applications. Even if your favorite app isn’t on the list above, there’s a chance it could be affected, and could be rendered unusable for some time.
